Churros, the Mexican cruller, is really Chinese?

Well sort of 🙂 Churros are fried, sweet dough extruded from a press and fried – then often served with hot chocolate (definitely Mexican, the chocolate). Now the Portuguese upon exploring southern China found the YoTiao or ‘fried stick’ and then brought it back to Europe. It is thought that the churro is based on the yotiao – so I guess it makes them cousins.
The word ‘churro’ has sketchy origins but the thinking is that it comes from Valencia and was related to a kind of wool – maybe the long strands of wool looked like the pastry.
