Réunion – The island in the news lately
When I was in France, I had a friend who I worked with who was from Ile de la Réunion. A very very tiny island “near” Madagascar’s eastern shore. Lately it’s been in the news as debris from Maylaysian flight 370 has shown up on its shores.
A stopping-off point for French sailors, Ile de la Réunion has a very unique cuisine. Stews, curries and even Chinese specialties reflects its colonial/voyaging history. Civet de zourites- a kind of octopus stew is a staple served along with rice. French cuisine of course has infiltrated the islands cuisine with sausages called Rougail saucisse – a sausage stew made with saffron.
