Tiny Bubbles for a Big Celebration

As the holidays are nigh, my mind turns to Champagne. I adore it – and could probably drink it at every meal! Yes, once in France, a farmer I met who lived near Epernay told me that he had a glass every morning with his toast and coffee!

Champagne is one of the Gods of French Cuisine along with cheese and wine. The word refers to not only the beverage but also its place of origin. Champagne is an ancient province of France nestled in the northeastern part of France about two hours from Paris by car. Any sparkling wine made within its borders has the right to be called ‘champagne’; any other sparkling wine made outside

its borders does not. So sparkling wine from Napa valley should not be called ‘champagne’ rather it can be referred to as using the ‘méthode champagnoise’ or the Champagne method.

The word ‘champagne’ is the French version of the word ‘campagnia’ or ‘campania’ from Italian. It means ‘country’ as in countryside and if you’ve ever been to Champagne you would see why. It is rolling hills of vineyards with small towns dotting the map. Reims is its capital.

You often see the word ‘Reims’ on a bottle of Champagne which means that the bubbly was made near Reims. The word is not pronounced as ‘reams’ but more as ‘rins’ with a soft S in French – the M is not pronounced in French unless you are from there – a person from Reims is called a ‘remois or remoise (for the ladies)’ where the M is pronounced.

You want to keep champagne cold- keeps the tiny bubbles sparkling. Amazon has a big selection of champagne buckets for keeping the bottle on ice.

Champagne glasses are also fun and festive- I like to have a whole collection of different ones and each person chooses their favorite at a party.
